The mother of Rachel and Flora.She is described as a single mother, who just happened to have turned 40 on the events of the essay “The Dress”. Her occupation being that of a bereavement counsellor, and such an occupation requires one to stay emotionally strong in front of ones clients, whom you are helping with their grief. Due to the amount of sop stories and tales of losses you encounter in such an occupation it’s very hard to stay positive for long, thus long term exposure to such a toxic environment can wear down once psyche, or mental health for dummies. She’s also divorced; this fact is established when Rachel announced she’s had enough of her sister and that she will be living with her father from now on.
The mother can then be characterised to be an unhappy single mother who just reached 40 and is having trouble coping with both her teenage / tween daughters, and due to this unhappiness and unfulfilling-ment of her current lifestyle with the events of her birthday she sought the answer at the bottom of a bottle of wine.
The relationship of Flora and Rachel
Flora and Rachel share a very typical little and big sister relationship filled with conflict. As much as Rachel might have cared for Flora her patience is at a limit with the childish and naïve Flora. It’s possible there are an age difference of 2-3 years between the siblings, as the morals / maturity difference between the siblings. We have no prior knowledge of how their relationship is before the events of “The Dress” but in the Dress they are described as at the brink of breaking.
