The mother is a forty year old lady who is thinking about quitting her job. Instead she wants to make something like jewellery. The mother has a really childish behaviour. You can easily see that at page 12, line 182-183. It says: “She stood up, walked to the wide glossy window, and pressed her face against the glass.” It’s not normal for an adult lady to do that. When she does that you know for sure that she is childish. She never grew up. All the way through the story she knows what she wants but she doesn’t do anything to get it. She’s very lazy. The mother must be very lonely while she never goes out and meet people. She always sits home and do stuff.
The text describes their relationship very well: “communication between her daughters was often like this: barbed and dangerous.” It means that their relationship is very rough and tension between the girls. Rachel is a little bit mature girl and Flora is childish and not as old as Rachel. Flora is the little sister while she steals Rachel’s dress. A smaller sister’s always steals their older sister’s dresses. It’s not the older sister who steals from their younger sister. When Flora steals Rachel’s dress we know that Flora is the youngest. Little sister’s always looks up to their older sister’s and want to be like them. It doesn’t seem like Flora thinks about the things she does because she steals her sister’s dress without thinking about the consequences.
