The biggest advantage is that boot camps do teach the kids self-control and responsibility. There are some troubled teens that will advantage from the discipline. Primarily teens are involved in illegal activities that are controlled for a life of crime without large intervention. It is also an option to consider for an extremely defiant or rebellious teen that hasn’t succeeded in other programs.
The cons:
The biggest weakness is that boot camps really are not relaxing programs and are not designed to deal with the original sensitive or social problems most troubled teens are struggling with. For teens struggling with depression, fear, self-harm, drug use, low self-esteem and many other problems this is an extreme option that is most likely going to make their problems worse.
It is worth noting that many therapeutic programs for teens are advertising they are ‘not boot camps’ - which really is not fair to boot camps. These programs have their place but it is a limited one. Best suited for teens involved in the young justice system or those teens who are headed in that way.
In the city of Los Angeles teenagers committed over 30,000 crimes, which are one in five kids who committed a crime involving gangs, drugs or prostitution. It is very hard to keep the kids out of the different gangs, because if your friends are involved in a gang it can lead you to get involved in a gang to, your friends can have a really bad influence on you, so you have to find friends that is not involved in some sort of crime. But I think the boot camps for the kids are a very good thing, because it helps the parents get control over their kids, so the boot camps helps the kids getting a good future, instead of end up doing nothing. The boot camps really help the kids to get a better future and helps the parents, take care of their son/daughter.
