The book is about a dog named Buck. He is a strong dog and living in the South with a man called Mr. Miller. A day when Mr. Miller is out, steals Manuel, who is Mr. Miller gardener, Buck, they go for a walk down to the railway station. Manuel steals only Buck because his family is in need of money. Manuel talking with a man, Manuel gets some money of the man and Manuel gives Buck away. Buck doesn’t understand what there is happening. Buck are put in a box and he be thrown at the train. After two days and nights he is at a station. Buck is scared and will defend himself, so he growl at the fat man who is taking him. The fat man destroyed the box with an axe. Buck try to bite the man but the man beat Buck with a club in his head, Buck keep trying but the man just continue to beat him and Buck have to give up. Buck is sold again and started to be with two men, François and Perrault, Buck started to like the two men.
Buck have to learn how to survive in the North. Buck gets new enemies and new friends. A dog called Spizt are the leader dog, but Buck hates him because Spizt killed one of the other sledge-dog Curly. Buck starts to defend himself and the other dog against Spizt. One day Spizt and Buck fight and just before Buck kill Spizt, Spizt disappears. Buck will be the leader dog now, but François don’t agree, François will have Sol-leks to be the new leader dog, but Buck get his vilje because he doesn’t will cooperate.
