I chose this topic because I like history and Nelson Mandela is a man known in history. Also he offered so many things for his Country, including his family, friends and even his freedom. I think Nelson Mandela is an inspiring person. We also seen a film about him ‘’Invictus’’ it really caught my attention and that is why I am going to tell you about Nelson Mandela.

Nelson Mandela was born in Transkei, South Africa, in the year of 1918. He was son of the chief of the local tembu tribe. At the age of seven he became the first member of his family to attend to a school. Later, he was there given the name “Nelson”, after a British admiral, by a teacher who found it difficult to pronounce Rolihlahla - Mandela’s native name. Mandela later attended Clarke bury Boarding Institute where he was, amongst many other things, taught western culture and traditions. He completed his Junior Certificate in two years, instead of the usual three.

ANC is a political party who have three goals, an end to discrimination, and the right for Black to buy land and full citizenship for all Africans. ANC was the only organization to fight for the Black people, so Mandela became a member in 1944. But in 1948 the national party was elected as the new government. The national party’s politic was called apartheid. Apartheid means to separate races. All of the power was giving to the whites. Mandela became the leader of the ANC in 1951.
