The purpose of the cover story “They **** you up, your mum and dad”, in The Times 15 October 2003, was to examine how teenagers feel about their parents. Furthermore are the article based on different teenagers opinion, about their relationship with their parents. According to some of the teenagers is the everyday life a hell, where they are struggling for independence, attention or acceptance from their parents. The many dilemmas between children and parents have started, the teenagers wonder about their rights and how the parents behave. It's mainly all about Teenagers, who tell us about their life with their family and those issues they have between them. Many of the problems look like each other. The article is going through problems for teenagers. One of the mainly problems is that the teenagers wants independence but their parents won’t let them have their own independence. The text is also revealing other kind of problems such as: Divorce, Adolescence and family time. Some of the teenagers would rather die than spend some time with the family.The fourteen year old teenager Millie gives the example that she wants to be treated like an adult. She thinks that in the age of nine, kids are reaching the age where they need more time for themselves. Sometimes it often gets hard to talk with ones parents and ends with the child don’t even want to talk. Millie point out that even though she have more freedom than she used to have. She stills wants more freedom from her parents.While some of the teenagers are having problems with their parents, the 18 year old Muslim girl does have another opinion. She thinks that it’s good that her parents are behind her. It makes her stronger as a person, and it reveals who she is. The Muslim girl says that her parents are her foundation, her religion shows her attitude and she know she got her assurance if she gets in troubles someday. The text gives us insight in how it is to be a teenager. Some of the teenagers have it harder than others. For example the 13 year old boy, who tells how hard it is that his parents are divorced, now he has two smaller houses. He also finds it annoying that his mom only is together with her boyfriend, who is together with the mom only because he thinks she is cool. In opposite to another teenager, who has smoked weed when he was 13 years old, smashed a guy and end up in jail, when he was 15 years old. The article tells the reader how different a teenage life can be. How they fight for their independence, how the everyday life can be complicated for both teenagers and parents.
