I will start by giving a brief summary of the film. A simple-minded gardener called Chance has spent all his life working in a garden for an old man. When the old man dies, chance becomes unemployed and homeless. Chance has never been out in the real world before, he has only seen the world through his television in the old man’s house. Chance got run into by a limousine, he ends up a guest of a woman called Eve and her husband Ben, an influential but sickly businessman. Now called Chauncey Gardner, Chance becomes a good friend to Ben. Chance becomes an unlikely political insider with his comparison with the economy and flowers in a garden. People from all over the world trying to find out who he is, but without success.
Chance started from the bottom, and ends up becoming successful. To come from nothing and become well known all over the country, this idea is very American and liberal. I think that Chance is making fun of the "American Dream", because he is shown as this stupid person perspective everything to a garden, and ends up as a national figure. An important point is all the misunderstandings in the movie as his surroundings make their own interpretations of what Chance says. Americans become a laughing-stock because Chance lives "the good life" when he is unintelligent. The film is a bit postmodern because it takes a lot of things up for discussion, for example the “American Dream”.
