The tunnel house

It was in the middle of March and the sun was shining. The birds were singing, the mood in the village was at the top and the trees were greener than ever before. Not that it was unusually in Ighund. I got out of my bed and went out to check the post. I opened the door to the shiny peaceful Ighund, and as normal I felt the sun on my body and the warm wind that melted my face. I took a look at the village as I always do. The neighbor’s children were playing in the street with their toys and my thoughts started wandering. It was at this place that I spoke with Juliet the very first time. I remember she walked right to me, looked me in the eyes and said with her soft voice “Hi, do you know where I can find some, eh…” She took the eyes off me and looked around in my garden and after seeing something she looked at me again. “Some garlic, do you know where I can find some garlic?” I knew that she didn´t like garlic, so her passing by was merely an opportunity talk to me. Later on we often talked about how awkward we both felt that morning. Juliet and I fell in love and had a wonderful time together and when she gave birth to our son, Thomas, I was the happiest man in the world. But the birth had been too hard for Juliet and she died a few days later. I almost burst into tears by the memories but suddenly I heard a tired childish voice behind me “Dad, what are you looking at?” I turned around and it was Thomas. His eyes were barely open and he was very sleepy. “God morning Thomas, I am just taking my daily look at the village this morning”. He dragged his sleepy body next to me and we stood there in silence, looking at the most beautiful and peaceful place you could find. “Thomas, why don´t you go back to bed, then I will bring you some breakfast?” Thomas went straight back into bed without saying a word. I picked up the post and went into the kitchen and made Thomas’ favorite meal, pancakes. I went to his room with the pancakes and waked him up so he could eat. While we sat on his bed eating he asked me “Dad, how come that it only rains two days every year?” He looked at me with big eyes. I chewed the last piece of pancake and looked at him. “In Ighund there is only two days at the year were the weather will be bad. It is “The Shauner days” as you know. The “Shauner days” started more than thousands of years ago when our land, Ighund, was attacked by the Sawk’s. The Sawk’s were small little creatures who had been living in peace with us in the mountains for many years. But one day they were not satisfied with the terms anymore, so the Sawk’s wanted to capture Ighund and make it to their home. They attacked us from all sides and surrounded Ighund. Not all of us were known as warriors but that night we all knew what we needed to do. The fight lasted for two days and two nights until we defeated those creatures from the mountains.” Thomas’ eyes were wide open. “Ever since the Sawk’s never put a food in our land and it has always rained in those two days that the war lasted. But Thomas, we have to get up now and make the house ready for Shaunder days tomorrow. We have a lot of work to do before your uncles arrive later today.”
