Analyse af Bram Stokers 'Dracula'

ANALYZE OF “DRACULA”“Dracula” is written in 1897 by a writer called Bram Stroker. The narrator tells the story to the reader, by writing thoughts and experiences down in his diary. He isn’t sure of what is real and what is unreal. At one point, the narrator is afraid he’ll go mad and loose his sanity. The narrator, Jonathan Harker, lives in Count Dracula’s castle, where he helps the Count with something that for the reader is unknown. Jonathan decides to explore the castle one day, when the Count isn’t there. He goes down to the lower storeys, and finds a living room. The living room is where the women used to live.

When he walks into the living room, Jonathan feels tired, and when he sees a couch he decides do lay down on it, even though the count asked him not to fall asleep. But Jonathan gets a pleasant feeling from disobeying the Count, so he falls asleep. When he wakes up, he can tell that he isn’t alone. Three young women stand in front of him. The women are beautiful, and he feels a yearning desire for them, and for their kisses.

He can see his own footsteps marked in the long accumulation of dust, but he can’t see anyone else footsteps. But still, in front of him, three beautiful young women stand. They throw no shadow on the floor. The women look a bit like the Count. “Two were dark, and had high aquiline noses, like the Count, and great dark, piercing eyes, that seemed to be almost red when contrasted with the pale yellow moon.” The narrator is confused because he is torn. He is longing for the women and at the same time feeling a deadly fear of them. “I felt in my heart a wicked, burning desire that they would kiss me with those red lips. “ – A big part of the story and the theme of the story is the relationship between the women and the narrator. The narrator have some kind of repressed sexuality, he is prevented from expressing his sexuality because he feels guilty and ashamed. He is turned on by being hurt, and the sexual attraction he feels frustrates him, and makes him doubt his own sanity and mind.
