“So this is permanence” is a short story about a young girl named Sarah. Sarah is a young teenager who gets pregnant by mistake. When Sarah found out she was pregnant she dropped out of High School. After the pregnancy her life gets turned upside down. Instead of taking care of the child, she decides to stay in bed all day, leaving her mother and sister with all the obligations. After a while Sarah confronts the baby’s father at the local diner. The baby’s father gets irritated and therefore leaves to the rest room. Meanwhile Sarah leaves her son at the diner and takes off. Throughout the story Sarah struggles with the fact that she has to be a mom to an unwanted child.
Sarah is clearly not mother material. She tries, but finds it hard to establish a bond whit a child that she basically don’t want anything to do with. Sarah is sixteen years old and still in school as it happens. At this age you have absolutely no experience of raising a child. It is obvious that Sarah has issues. But you cannot accuse her of being a ‘bad parent’. She is a teenager and does not know better. Sarah clearly has a hard time loving the baby. He cries constantly and this irritates her. She tries everything but nothing really seems to comfort him. Even though her mother and sister try to help her take care of her son, she doesn’t seem to care:
