”Owl” (2012) is a short story written by Jackie Kay. The short story is about the main character Anita and her best friend Marion who have been friends since they were children. In those days they gave each other nicknames, Barn and Tawny, and these names stayed despite their ageing. The girls are now about the forties, but most of the sets in their childhood through flashback but it also set in their contemporary life. The past is their free space and the two friends are still holding on to the memories and the uncomplicated life during childhood. Because of that, the main theme could be growing up, or fearing the unaccustomed in life.

“Owl” is written with an explicit first-narrator who is Anita. The language in this short story differs from the language in many other stories, and most of the story is told through flashbacks or through dialogues, which reflects Anita’s life, but also her as a person.

“Sandra’s getting so boring,” I said to Tawny and Tawny said “She’s all right,”which made me feel miserable and worried”.(Lines 45-46)

It is also remarkable that there are sentences which give a comment indirectly or a little hidden in the quotations and flashbacks. It is almost like seeing a movie scene and then it is paused so that we can be told some relevant information that the scene does not show, but which only the actors know and think.
