In this essay, I will give a summary of the short story the fox cub written by Jackie Brewster, Then I will describe the setting in the story, then I will identify the narrator’s viewpoint of the story, then I will characterize the two persons from the story Marie and Rachel, and then I will discuss the theme and message there is in the short story.
The short story is about two completely different young girls Marie and Rachel. Marie is thirteen years old and has just arrived in the city, and she doesn’t know anyone there. One day Marie is sitting by herself at the playing ground, then she meets Rachel and they become friends. Rachel wants to bring Marie home to her house, but she knows that she is the type of girl her mother doesn’t like, Marie tells Rachel, she has a fox cub, so they decide to cycle together to Marie’s home, which is very old and ugly. Marie has a father and cousin, who she lives with, the cousin is very impolite to Rachel, and he tells them that he will lock them up in their chicken cage. When Rachel sees the fox cub is it sick and looks like it will die soon. After that episode Rachel never saw Marie again.
