We follow a young Amish mother, Rachel, and her 8 year old son Samuel. They are going for a trip to her sister, who lives in Baltimore. Rachel’s husband is dead. Samuel is surprised, to see how the other people live, and how they look. He has only seen the Amish people, never “normal” people like we would call them, and he had never been on a train station before.

They are travelling by train. At the train station Samuel uses the toilet. Suddenly he becomes a witness to the murder of a man. He sees two men that committed the murder. The one that he saw closely in front of him is an African black man.

The policeman who is at the train station introduce himself as John Book, and asks Samuel about what he has seen, and who killed the man, who also was a policeman. Rachel and Samuel stay to the next day at John’s sister’s house, and then he will pay a new ticket for them to Baltimore. But first Samuel has to identify the murderer.

John Book, the policeman, had funded some men that probably could be the policeman’s murderer. But none of the men matches the murderer. Suddenly Samuel sees a newspaper at the office with a small picture of police Narcotics Lieutenant James McFee. He identifies him as the man, who murdered the policeman at the train station. As John Book returns home, he sees McFee in a parking garage. They confront each other in a fierce shoot out. Book starts to bleed. But he returns Rachel and Samuel to Lancaster Country. When he is about to leave, he passes out because he almost bled to death. He crashes his car into the birdhouse. Because he is in Lancaster Country where there only are Amish people, he cannot go to get help form a doctor. So Rachel helps finding help.
