”The Three Heads of the Well”, is a story about a princess and her father. He’s a king who remarries an ugly queen, who also haves a very ugly princess. The king’s daughter goes out on a journey, to seek fortune. She meets a old man on the way, and gives him some food. He helps her on her way through a Thorny hedge, and tells her about the well with three heads. He tells her, that she must do whatever the heads says. She does and the heads gives her 3 gifts: beauty, a sweet voice and the fortune, so she will get married to he greatest prince around. Her father, the king, hears about it, and throws a enormous party for them. After some time, her ugly stepsister wants to do the same, because she envies the princess. She doesn’t help the old man, and cuts herself on the thorny hedges, and she doesn’t do anything the three heads says. She isn’t blessed by them, and only gets married with a poor country cobbler. Her mom, the ugly queen, hangs herself, and the king is happy.

Essay

The story itself, is a typically fairy tale. We got a evil stepmother, a princess and a king. As in many other fairy tales, the princess goes through tests, and prevails at last. As in “Tattercoats” and other fairy tales, the princess goes out on a journey, to overcome something, or to get something. In “The Three Heads of the Well”, the princess gets directed by good people and magic heads. It reminds me of “The Spoiled Child”, where the princess, who also goes on a journey, gets guide, and directed by her bracelet. Its much about good behaviour, and doing the right thing, and the get rewarded. In this story, the princess gets rewarded with beauty and a good marriage, and last but not least: the wonderful and the greatest prince. It’s the same in “The Spoiled Child”, where the princess gets guided to do the right thing, and is rewarded with, again, a prince.
