Paintings and patterns is a short story written by a Pakistani woman, who lives and are born in England. It’s a short story witch have discrimination and the difficulties that culture differences causes as the main team. Our main character is Amina, who is around 7 years old and goes to school. Amina lives with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Iqbal, in the back of the shop they own. Although Amina lives with her parents, she spends a lot of time alone, because Mr. and Mrs. Iqbal works all the time. She is struggling to meet the expectations of her teacher, who doesn’t quit understand her religion or culture background. Without fully understanding why, Amina gets caught up in a conflict between her teacher and her parents. Amina is trapped between her own religion and her needs to fit in.
One day, when Amina comes home from school, she have brought a drawing of the Holey Family, witch she proud shows to her mother, who gets very upset and asks who it is and what the story are. Amina tells the story and besides she tells “The teacher says it’s to good to spoil on the wall at school”. In fact the teacher didn’t want to hang up the picture, because Amina had drawn the faces brown. When Amina are done telling the storry, her mother asks her to never tell her father. It’s gives us an inside of the family. They can’t tell each other everything, there are sign of lack of confidence and Mrs. Iqbal may be afraid of her man hurting her or her daughter. Afterwards Mrs. Iqbal lovingly tells Amina that according the Koran, they are not allowed to draw people and explain that they as Muslims do no see Jesus as the Son of God.
