At a time of uncertainty, popular culture looks backwards for comfort. In the time period 1970 to 2000, most of the modern world dreamed about the future and what it beholds, they imagined stuff that is physically impossible like time travel, lightsabers from the movies “Star Wars” and special creatures out of this world or so called aliens. When the first Star Wars movie was produced and published the whole world stood speechless, and all the producers from around the world started to produce future like movies and many of them had similarities to the modern day problems like global warming and terror. The crowd loved the hover boards, devices that could prepare an entire meal in seconds and flying cars. But the world changed and the inhabitants with it, suddenly there were a new interest in the entertainment business, the people longed for the times medieval and simpler times. The time of magic and dragons, the time where everything couldn’t be explained by science and technology. Magic is a thing we cannot explain and that catches our interest.
I believe we fear the future and what it beholds, so we look back and find comfort in the past, we can´t change the store of the future, but the past have already happened so if we want to we can change it the way we want to in fiction stories, which let our minds escape the present reality. The question is are we running away from reality when we indulge in fantasy? Or are we escaping reality just to find it again and wrestle with it in disguise? Not everything is as simple as it looks, as Gandalf found out when he tried to open the door to Moria. Let's not forget that the characters in The Lord of the Rings are themselves nostalgic for an even earlier age. The novels are set in the last hours of the age of magic, with all those rather attractive Elves departing the scene, leaving men speechless, human like devices. If The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy, it's ultimately a fantasy about growing up and putting childish things aside.
