Not many years ago science fiction was bestselling either as books or movies. Characters known worldwide would keep our hands glued to the book or eyes glued to the TV screen whether they were fighting for justice in space like in Star Wars and Star Trek or defending the Earth from a variety of enemies with futuristic weapons in The Matrix or Men in Black. Through the last decade or so the same market has been dominated by the fantasy genre. In amazing worlds created by authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling characters like Harry Potter and Frodo Baggins are surrounded by magic and mystical creatures.
In the beginning of this century when Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings hit the theaters they ranked first and second at the US box office. The following movie in each of these series cleared $88 million and $62 million in their opening weekend at the US box office, respectively. This proves our love for the fantasy genre but is the science fiction genre really on its way to be forgotten? Still a big amount of science fiction movies have seen the light in the last couple of years and the arrival of quite a few more have already been announced.
