The whole Subway concept started with Pete’s Super Submarines back in 1965. It was todays co-founder Fred Deluca, who started the 5-foot long sandwich shop as a 17-year-old college student. He actually started the Subway shop to pay for his college, so he could earn some extra money through his stay. It was Peter Buch a family friend to Fred, who actually gave Fred the suggested idea about opening a sandwich-shop, which could help him through college. So Pete borrowed Fred $1000 at the beginning, so he could get started with his little business. Since then Pete and Fred have been partners. Today the Subway-concern exist of more than 20.000 shops in the US, which is more than Mc Donald’s have. There are 40.000 franchises spread worldwide in 91 countries with more than 150.000 employees, which results in billions of sales every year. You could probably wonder why Subway sandwiches became a so great success, but it is actually pretty simple. But you should bear in mind that Subway still got challenges in other markets. The market in China is a big challenge for the concern. It can be very difficult to tackle the expansion-challenge to China right. But there is a huge interest in the Chinese market, because of the massive population. Whether they should focus on the market in China or not is a good question.
