There is no doubt that Subway is one of the biggest fast-food franchises in the world, with over forty thousand stores worldwide in 98 different countries. The subway concept was founded all the way back from1965, when the founder Fred Deluca opened the first ever Subway restaurant, named Pete’s Super Submarine in Bridgeport, the U.S., at the age of 17. As a broke college student, Fred Deluca needed extra income to get him through college, and it was at that time, Pete’s Super Submarines was created. The meaning behind the restaurant name comes from one of his good friends Pete, who helped him finance the opening of his first Subway restaurant with only one thousand dollars. Ever since then Pete and Fred have been partners.
Today Subway is a giant franchise with fortyeller40? thousand stores, one hundred and fifty employees, and billions of sales every single year. With Subway’s forty thousand stores, Subway surpassed McDonald’s who have around 38 thousand stores around the world. But even with Subway's big success on so many markets, they are still facing many challenges. One of Subway's biggest challenges is their expansion in China, and even with huge market penetration potential, Subway still questions whether they should focus on the Chinese market or not.
