Tale om den amerikanske drøm og 'Death of a Salesman'

My fellow Americans, welcome. Today I have one question for you. One question. Why did I just call you my fellow Americans? Why are we the same? No, what makes us Americans? Is it our heritage, our accents or is it our mutual pursuit of happiness? My fellow Americans, I come to you today to tell you, The American Dream is dead.

The American Dream is a concept that we have heard of, talked about and thought about at least twice this week. And why is that? Is this because this “dream” is our own? Or is it something else? I once read this play, no, this tale about a man with a wife and two sons. He lived in New York and his living was selling. He was a salesman you see; you might have read it yourself. The tale is called “Death of a salesman” and it’s about a salesman called Willy Loman who, in his desperate attempt to pursue The American Dream, ended his life on a whim because he was oblivious to his family’s struggles and that they were caused by him and his lack of knowledge on how to be a salesman in a modern world that focuses more on your selling skills than your charisma. And thus my fellow Americans, Willy Loman came to an abrupt end.
