GMO er en forkortelse af genetisk modificerede organismer. Når man genmodificere, overfører man et stykke arvelig egenskab, fra en organisme til en anden, ved at “klippe” et gen ud fra arvemassen og indsætte det i den organisme, hvis egenskaber man ønsker at ændre. F.eks. hvis man fandt et gen, som gør at organismen kan vokse, selvom der er høje koncentrationer af salt i jorden, kan man overføre det gen til en organisme, som har brug for det, eller det ville være praktisk for. Man kan genmodificere både mennesker, dyr og planter, men planterne er klart den organisme man genmodificere mest.
