One of the old themes of Hollywood, that we have drunk in with our mother’s milk, was once more described in Kevin Costner’s movie “Dancing with wolves” from 1990
.The main character of the movie, John Dunbar is played by Costner himself, who will become the hero of the day, when he shows an unusual heroism in one of the most bloody battles of the American civil war. His courage is rewarded with a reassignment.
After two weeks of traveling he finally reaches the American frontier; an abandoned fort on the prairie. In the beginning his only company is a wolf. But after a few days of loneliness, two of the leaders of the Lakota tribe come to visit him.
His attempt to establish contact and friendship with these natives is described picturesquely through the pictures of the movie as well as the sound. When we talk about sound, please note, that the Indians’ language in the movie is their own and not English.
The critics’ reactions of the movie have been very different, from condemnation to praise. After the ending scene of the movie, the audience is left with the question: is this the new view on Indians of America, or is it just a continuation of John Fords westerns? However, it is a fact the Costners movie received no less than seven of the most wanted Oscar statuettes of Hollywood.
