Kiss and Tell is a short story written by John Sam Jones. The short story has an overall theme of sexuality and identity.

In this analytical essay there will be a summary of the short story, a characterization of the two main characters and an analysis of the setting of the short story.

In the start of the short story we get introduced Seimon Gwyn, a fourteen-year-old boy who has yet to hit puberty unlike his peers. We also get introduced to his teacher Dylan Roberts who is a homosexual, but he hides it from his coworkers because the situation in Wales towards homosexuals isn’t that good. Seimon is having sexual fantasies about Dylan.

When Seimon finds out Dylan is gay his fantasies get clearer. Seimon isolates himself a lot at the school so the year nine representative Shân Jenkins sits down to talk with him. Seimon tells Shân about his sexuals fantasies with Dylan but he tells them like it is reality. Shân gets very disturbed and worried about this so she goes to the school council link teacher Mrs. Puw. After she hears about this Dylan gets suspended.

Seimon is presented as an underdeveloped boy “Most of his classmated had started to muscle-up, which made rugby more of a man’s game; it made the showers afterwards a real embarrassment too. Naked and puny amongst so many well-developed boy-men, he just wanted to disappear.” (p1. 9-12) His inner characterization is a young boy discovering his own sexuality amongst his friends despite being attracted to the same sex. Seimon has a hard time trying to fit in so he feels isolated. “When the boys he hung around with seemed not to want to see him, he wondered if he’d made himself too insignificant. Being lonely was horrible. Feeling isolated, he doubted himself even more.” (p1. 14-16)
