Analyse af 'A gap of sky' af Anna Hope

Youth is an odd thing; it is a life period full of choices and options. Some young people tend to feel lost within this ocean of opportunities – and some decide to search for a distraction. Can you blame them for that? Being young was a lot easier before the industrialization. Back then, people followed their parent’s footsteps, generation to generation. Today we have all the possibilities in the world, not to mention the freedom that comes along with it. The choices that we are constantly faced with can be overwhelming in some cases – and therefore, as mentioned, some young people search for a distraction, to help them cope with reality. A popular distraction is drugs.

The text introduces us to a young girl named Ellie. Ellie lives in London, where she is attending a course at the university. She is living the wild life, full of drugs, alcohol and unlimited freedom. This environment is also very crucial for the themes in the text, which are; drugs, escapism, loneliness, freedom, captivity and fear.

Living alone in such a big city, might explain why Ellis says that she is feeling lonely. The writer doesn’t mention any close relationship other than the relationship she has to her mother on page 3 line 110 ‘’Whatever, it was still an expression on something, a distilled expression of something, of her mother, of her love, and Ellie had just showed it away, taken it for granted’’ the relationship between Ellie and her mother seems distanced. Ellie misses her mother, and feels that she has taken her for granted. The missing relationship to her mother might explain the loneliness that Ellie feels, a temporary solution to that problem could easily be the drugs.Ellie’s drug addiction could be a way of escaping reality, at least just for a little while. On page 1 line 32 there is an example ‘’Yessss! Clever Ellie. Little bump just to get things started’’ Not only does this quote confirm her addiction; it also tells us that the drugs seem to have a greater impact on her than her education. She feels that the drugs help her dealing with school and the responsibility that goes along with it.
