Everyone wants to be the best version of themselves and sometimes to satisfy others. We all do it in different ways to impress different people. Some people act mature and diligent to satisfy their parents. Some people do "cool" things to impress their friends. Many people, however, are not the person they want to be when trying to satisfy others. These are some of the emotions and thoughts the main protagonist Ellie experiences in the novel A Gap of Sky, written by Anna Hope.
The short story “A Gap of Sky” is told in third-person narrative, since there is use of third-person pronouns such as “she” and “they” throughout the whole story. The story is only told from the main character, Ellies’ point of view and as the reader, we follow her thoughts, reflections, and actions. In the story, we get an inside look at what seems likely to be Ellie’s ordinary life. Ellie is a nineteen-year-old girl, who lives in the city of London. As a reader, it seems as if she is a bit messy and disorganized. “Oh, shit…..It is Monday. Essay there is an essay due, important, due for Tuesday morning page”. She is close to being kicked out of university which also indicates that she is not very conscientious. Furthermore, she has been drinking and taking drugs the day before she has to write her essay, which also points towards the fact that she is irresponsible. After being very messy and running through the town, she finds a glove which is a symbol of freedom, independence, possibilities and to get a grip on oneself. After experiencing the revelation, the gap of sky, she seems to notice different things. She begins feeling nauseous and like she is about to die: “Ellie’s head is throbbing and her skull feels as though it might split open and she really feels as though she might die. And what will happen to her, if she dies?”.
