A place in the sun

This short fiction story ''A place in the sun'' has a first person narrator. It is told by the twelve-yearold girl who is the main character of the story. The first person narrator is a twelve-year-old girl, who values perfection infrequently much. It would not be a virtue to claim that she lives in a superficial world where appearance comes across as most important to her. I but I do need to get my teeth fixed, and I need to get back

But she does not acknowledge it by herself which is kind of ironic. Throughout the story she talks about chasing her dreams, and it is to get admission to the Gold Beach and Platinum Beach. She actually thinks that she is not greedy, even though she keeps aspiring to higher ranks.

She only seem be concerned about the material things in life. She does not even mention the inside of a person, not even once through the whole story, yet she claims that she is not being greedy. That is the twelve-year-old girl's values in life, perfection and being spotless. It seems like a dystopia future. She only strives for a higher rank, she is self-centered because she will not help those who have lower rank than herself. She doesn't want to be seen with an All-Public boy, she thinks it is embarrassing because he is in a lower rank than her. She wants to look better, so she can be moved to the gold beach or the platinum, she is now in the silver rank. The theme in the story could be the ideal body because there is a lot of focus on the appearance and also because the main character is so desperate striving to be on the platinum beach, you have to acquire a certain type of body, before you can be accepted as ''one of them''. The fat and ugly people or those who are not good enough, belongs to an all-public beach, or a lower place to be in. ''You get all kinds of sickness on the All-Public: fat women; hairy women; pregnant women; women in polyester slacks.'' page 1 line 18-19 Another theme in this story could be worthiness. None of them have worthiness because all what they want is to be famous, to be seen as a cool person, not helping people whose standard is lower than theirs, only searching for ''fame'', or for a better look. Because mostly you are getting judged by your appearance, and not by your personality. It depends on how you look, if you are pretty, you belong to the highest rank, but if you are not, you belong to a lower rank. The-twelve-year old
