“Dead Poets Society” is the story about a couple of junior year boys at the Welton Academy, an exclusive private school for extremely bright boys. The story starts during the opening ceremony for the new school year. The ceremony is held in the school’s chapel (a religious place). To the sound of bagpipe music, four boys enter the chapel carrying some banners. Each banner is deciphered with a word representing what the school stands for: Honor, Discipline, Excellence and Tradition. And through the exiting year, the group of boys, meets Mr. Keating, and extremely controverted teacher, whom methods is very different from the other sophisticated teachers, and he’ll the reason why the group of boys get the best year of their lives.
Mr. Keating
Mr. Keating is an English teacher who graduated from Welton Academy and now teaches at the same place. He is not like any other teacher. He is more creative and inspiring and makes the students (only male students, it is a school for boys only) feel that education is fun. He makes them step unto their tables so they can get another perspective on things, throw balls, write poems, and take strolls. Keating does not do this so they can enjoy themselves, in fact it is all part of a bigger plan, which is that he wants the boys to open up and discover their talents. He encourages his students to “Make their lives extraordinary”. “Carpe diem, Seize the day” is another sentence by Mr. Keating, which is repeated in several situations in the book. Keating lived in England and was probably offered a job in the States. Anyway, he had to leave his fiancé/girlfriend and he writes letters to her.
