“Heeeere’s Johnny” is one of the famous quotes from the award winning movie, The Shining in which Jack Torrance moans followed by an evil laugh, when he’s about to brutally slaughter his wife with an axe. The Shining is a horror movie and was first published in 1980, directed by award winning film producer Stanley Kubrick. Stanley is very honored for his technical perfection and deep intellectual symbolism. He have created films we all know and love such as “Spartacus” and “Dr. Strangelove”.

I assume horror is not the most universally loved film genre, am I right? All of us know people that abhor the genre, usually all having the same reasoning of, “I can’t stand horror movies because they scare me!”.. I don’t think these people know what they are missing out on, also it’s the only film genre avoided for doing its actual purpose, scaring people. First I will try to explain why I think this particular movie is scary, secondly, I will talk about which fears that are being targeted in the film and connect it with evolutionary psychology.

First of all, I will try to explain why I think this particular movie is scary, and I will do that by first describing the environment. The movie takes place on a deserted hotel up north around the secluded mountains of Colorado, USA. The hotel is huge and far away from any civilization. Inside the hotel I would describe as long quiet halls, with endless hotel rooms and without the slightest presence of human beings. This setting combined with cold colors and nerve-racking long scenes filled with very loud and scary piano sound, creates a very tension filled atmosphere that slowly builds up and gives us that unnerving feeling that something bad is going to happen.
