The short story is published in 1973 and is a the genre is Gothic Horror. The majority of the story takes place in a psychiatrist's office, where a man comes to talk about the "murders" of his three young children. The father and also the protagonist are called Lester Billings. His first two children die mysteriously of apparently unrelated causes when left alone in their bedrooms. The only common thing to their deaths is a crack in the closet door that the protagonist is certain he had closed when he left his children. After the accidents they moved away to another house. Their first year in the new house was happy and without incident, but not long after, the protagonist's mother-in-law falls ill. The wife leaves to care for her mother, and the protagonist and his son are left alone. It soon becomes clear that whatever killed the first two children has managed to track down the protagonist's new house, and after a period of time the boogeyman (the killer) attacks Billings son.
Lester Billings is a little psychopathic. He is also aggressive, tense and nervous. He is also depressed because his children die so he has the need to talk to somebody about it, and therefore I go to a psychologist. “Billing lies down on the couch while he talks to the psychologist. He gets furious when interrupted by the psychologist.”. He is 28 years old. He is not a catholic. He has three children and is divorced. Lester married Rita in 1965. He was 20 years old and she was 18 years old when Rita got pregnant. He is from Waterburg – Connecticut. An industrial firm in NY employs him. Even though he can be aggressive he still really loves his family. He could be drinking. He looks haggard and has some anger issues.
