Who was he? Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on the 18th July 1918 in Mvezo South Africa. He was born with the name, Rolihlahla Mandela, but got the name Nelson when he started school because the schools didn’t allow African names.
What was he known for? Nelson is mainly known for his fight against the apartheid in South Africa. And being the first black president in South Africa. He fought against the apartheid by demonstrating and actually using violent methods such as sabotaging the white governments building to get a chance to cast a light over the discrimination in South Africa at that point. After prison Nelson Mandela stopped using violence and started using words instead. He believed in the dialog between people with different opinions.
Mandela’s early life:
Childhood: Mandela grew up in the village Qunu with his father and mother, both were illiterate, but Mandela still managed to turn out just fine. Mandela started at the Methodist School, were he also got the name Nelson by his teacher.
Early political achievements: Nelson Mandela’s first big political achievement was in 1948 when he formed the A.N.C youth league. The A.N.C youth league is the youth wing of the African National Congress which is a party of post-apartheid. In 1952 Oliver Tambo and himself opened South Africa’s first black law practice.
