The video is about how PED, performance enhancing drugs, get used by athletes to improve their performance in various sports. The video begins with CNN Senior Medical Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen explaining that it is still up to debate, whether the PED’s work or not, but that the athletes seems to think they do. She also explains different sports use different PED’s that the athletes think are tailor made for their needs, with the example of biking where there is a focus on drugs that improve endurance.
Elizabeth Cohen mentions that they have been trying to stop the use of PED’s since the 1960’s, but have not been able to stop them completely. She explains that it is very hard to detect if someone is using drugs, because every time they figure out how to detect it, the abusers figure out a new way to hide it.It has become so widespread, that some sports call for a drug test the minute an athlete wins.
At the end of the video, Elizabeth explains about the downsides of using PED’s. They can cause a multitude of side effects such a road rage, heart problems and diabetes, and that sometimes athletes forget these consequences when taking them.
