Analyse af Lois Lowrys 'The Giver'

The giver – analytic essayThey think they are in the ideal community, but they don’t know what is beyond the community or anything. They live in a community, where life wasn´t unexpected, inconvenient or unusual. They “know” their community is best for everyone, because their life is decided for them. In this essay will I focus on Jonas and how/why he ”sees beyond”. I will explain the choices he makes and why he take those choices.

The book, The giver, is written by the American writer Lois Lowry, which has been in controversial issues in her questioning authority, because this book. In the book we learn about a guy called Jonas which lives in a ”Utopian” community, where everything is in order with no controversies whatsoever. A commitee was in charge, making the decision of how the community and citizens should be. They even chose what assignment a child would get as a twelve-year-old. The main character Jonas becomes a Twelve, and gets his Assignment. But it isn’t an ordinary Assignment it is the most honourable and prestigious Assignment you could get in the community: The Receiver. Jonas became a receiver but it wasn’t an easy job. Jonas’ ”trainer”, the giver, taught him new things, which nobody know about or understood. Jonas learned about colors, which was the first sign of ”seeing beyond”. He learned about feelings, killing, sorrow, loneliness, but he did also learn about happiness, courage, love etc. Learnings these fascinating things made him question the community. They don’t have freedom to own choice, the can’t chose what they want to be when they become adults, they experience feelings etc. Jonas was questioning the community, and the Giver then came with a idea, as he got courage from Jonas, that Jonas should leave the community so he could see what’s beyond the community, even though his memories would be lost and given ti the citizens. Jonas couldn’t live in the anymore so he chose to leave the community with the next receiver: Gabriel.The story takes place in a very different world compared to out world, in many aspects. Even though there is some similarity between the two worlds. Jonas’ world is an indifferent place, where everything is colorless, only Jonas and the Giver could see colors. The community lays a long distance from anything, so nothing can come and disturb the peace the commitee have provoker for the citizens. If we read the last chapter or so, we understand that Jonas has a long journey to the Elsewhere, this clarifies that the community is isolated from everything, to prevent anything detestable happening.
