The IRA was an Irish republican revolutionary paramilitary organisation which was established in 1919 on the 25 of November by Michael Collins. At that time the British government were ruling Ireland and the IRA were fighting against the British Crown. The IRA played an important role in the war of independence from 1919-1921. When the war was over the British government accepted the establishment of the republic of Ireland named EIRE. At that time the IRA was split into two groups because one group was satisfied with the solution and the other part wanted more independence: The EIRE was a majority of Catholics and the northern part which was ruled by the British Crown was a majority of protestants. One part of IRA wasn’t satisfied and a bloody civil war was coming up but ended up with the separation of the Irish island in two parts: Northern Ireland and Eire. At that time the IRA was replaced by PIRA (Provisional Irish Republican Army) and during the next several decades they wanted Ireland’s reunification and they fought through terrorism. In 1997 the PIRA together with the British Prime minister negotiated a peace agreement and the IRA became represented by the political party: Sinn Fein. Under the negotiation and in the following years PIRA was monitored while they surrendered all their weapons till the British government could trust them.
