I chose to engage with The Virginia Tech shooting because of my curiosity for the topic. I wanted to gain a cultural understanding to why school shootings happen more frequent in America rather than any other place on earth. Simultaneously, I think it’s an exceedingly relevant topic because it takes up much of the public debate. For an example, following the horrific shooting at a high school in Florida this year, students created “March For Our Lives” to raise awareness and protest gun violence.

Introduction

The morning of April 16, 2007, at 7.15 am, Cho Seung Hui a 23-year old senior student entered the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, shot and killed two people, beginning what would become the deadliest and worst example of a school shooting in United States history. More than two and a half hours later he entered another hall of the campus and killed another 30 people. The rampage ended when Cho turned his gun on himself. A total of 32 people were killed and another 25 injured from the rampage.

Cho Seung Hui

Cho was of South Korean descent and his parents worked all 7 days of the week which was typical in South Korea. Although he had never tried anything else, I think that the lack of attention might’ve triggered the shooting.
