Hunger games - catching fire

Suzanne Collins, the writer of the novel Hunger Games - Catching Fire, has throughout her life been known to war and the consciences of just that. Since childhood, with a father who served in the Vietnam war, she’s been introduced to the horrors of war and the effect it has.1 In the novel, we get introduced to a dystopian society which is built in the shadows of time with terrible war. People ?ghting for survival inside as well as outside the arena with the help of allies, friend and family. A society created by control and fear, where you only trust your closest. Therefore, the characters and the friendship between the characters will be analysed in the assignment together with the setting of the novel to gain a wider understanding of the situation they are found in.

The novel is set in an unknown time in the imaginary country Panem. Panem is made up of the Capitol and 12 districts, however, we get introduced to a 13th district in chapter 11 where the main character Katniss meets two girls headed to the long ago destroyed district 13 that reportedly still is there with an underground city. As said the novel is set in an unknown time, but it could be argued that it is in the future. The technology is far advanced in the way they build arenas with abilities that nature does not have, an example “His foot dislodges a pebble and it falls into the abyss…as he sits to rest, the pebble shoots up beside him ” 2 here it is described how, at the edge of the arena, it ends with a cliff, but when things were thrown down the cliff it magically appears again. We do on the other hand know it is set at the time of the 75th anniversary of the Hunger Games.
