Comments on a blog post about young people's experiences with being gay.
Gay or Straight?Sexuality can be a difficult topic for young people.Read these replies to a blog-entry to learn more about some teenagers’ experiences and opinions on homosexuality.Didden 2/11 10.45:“I’m a 16-year-old boy. I’ve known for a while that I’m gay. But I didn’t tell anyone about it until recently. I was really worried about how people would react. But it was actually better than I thought. I was most worried about what my mum would say. At first, she was afraid that all her friends would criticise her – for being a bad mother or something, I don’t know. But when she realised that her friends were fine about it, then she was too. She’s been really supportive. I was wondering what experiences other gay teenagers have had.”030990 2/11 11.15:“I’m bisexual. I haven’t had any negative reactions from my friends. They treat me the same way that they treat their heterosexual friends. If they didn’t, then they wouldn’t be real friends. So, if any so-called “friends” criticise you, drop them – they’re not worth it.”Teddy 2/11 12.02:“I agree. I have had the same positive experiences with my friends. But the problem can be the people you don’t know. For example, I’m gay and if I go out somewhere, like to a club, with my boyfriend, we have to be really careful. If we touch each other, some people get offended. My boyfriend was once beaten up by a gang of guys who “didn’t like” homosexual people. So I would say that the problem is not usually the people you know, but some of the people you meet on the street.”0412 2/11 12.13:“I am heterosexual and I would say that I am completely tolerant of gay people. But some gay people make too much of a point of being gay in public, for example, by showing a lot of affection to each other in an exaggerated way. I don’t think that heterosexual people should do that either, so I don’t see why gay people should. They should keep their most passionate feelings to themselves, like everyone else.”Blog detective 2/11 12.54:“I think that the main problem is that teenagers don’t get enough information about sexuality in general, including homosexuality. I have loads of gay friends and they are completely “normal”, whatever that means. They just want to be treated like everyone else. I talk about the same things with my gay friends as with other people – there’s no difference.”007 :-) 2/11 13.15:“I just wanted to say that taboos about homosexuality can even cause problems between heterosexual people. I am heterosexual but I thought that one of my friends might be gay because he never talked about girls. So I asked him and he got really offended. He thought I was saying that he wasn’t masculine. I didn’t mean that at all. It just shows that there is a general negative attitude to homosexuality and I think that’s wrong.”
