Abraham Lincoln once said, “Achievement has no color”. Color has nothing to do with how we learn, or who we are. Everything we are and everything we learn comes from society. We are not born evil, we learn to be the way the society we live in wants us to be.
Time changes, society has changed. Racism isn’t as big a problem in the modern world as it has been. In a few years there has been many changes, but that doesn’t change history. There is great importance in knowing history, it’s supposed to teach us for the future. Those who do not know history are condemned to repeat it.
The story “Tell Freedom” is an autobiography by Peter Abrams. The autobiography was published in 1954, which is a fairly short period after the second world war, the story is set in Africa’s time of Apartheid, which was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa. South Africa gained independence from Great Britain, but without gaining any legitimate control.
In the story we follow a south African that recalls his childhood and adolescence in the slums of Johannesburg and then his ultimate escape to England to become an accepted black writer. The reader follows the protagonist through a normal day, crackling day.
