January 29 1979, Branda Spencer (age 16) killed two and injured 7 people at her school in San Diego, because she didn’t like Mondays. From that episode till February 1997, there were only 9 episodes of school shootings, but after that the number of school shootings escalated. Since 1997 there have been over 70 incidents of school shootings world wide. Most of them in the US. And why did it escalate in 1997? I think that video games are to blame. Many people would say that you also can blame the violent movies, but these movies have been there for about 50 years. The violent video games started around 1995. I remember the computer game called “Doom”. Compared to the games we have today it is an uninteresting game, but thirteen years ago it was one of the best games at the time. It was also the one of the first games under the genre “first-person shooter”, which I think was the cause of the increasing of incidents. The game doesn’t really have a history like the games we see today. It’s about a highly trained space marine, who is deported to Mars, and to survive, he must take use of weapons and kill aliens. When he shoots a monster it explodes. It’s very bloody. I remember that my cousin and I played “Doom” in our yard with plastic guns. So it had an effect on us. Of course there is a long way from playing it in the yard to go out and actually do these things to other human beings or animals.
