Bernie Sanders to Brooklyn College Graduates: Don’t “Allow Demagogues to Divide Us”

The 76 years old Democratic politician Bernie Sanders from Vermont speaks to the graduating class of 2017 at Brooklyn College. He speaks about some personal stories and that there is something wrong in The American States, that needs to be changed as soon as possible. He speaks about the current problems America faces. Such as the rich people are becoming much richer and that no ones takes heights for the 43 million Americans that lives in poverty. He says that we have 2 choices one of them is to throw up our hands in despair, and loudly proclaim that we can’t beat the system. It is an understandable response but it’s not an acceptable response. The other option is to is to stand up and fight back.
The topic is perfect since Bernie’s speech is about not letting the demagogues divide us into different sections. Such as poor, rich, middle class and religion and background. The speaker is Bernie Sanders. His goal is to make the graduating class of 2017 change the problems America faces at that certain time. Bernie Sanders speaks about his youth “I grew up in Flatbush and graduated from James Madison High School” (l.8). When he says that it encourages the audience and makes them aware that Bernie Sanders knows the area, and that probably many of them has a similar background to him. He also uses personal stories to connect the audience through his speech. He relies on the students and count them to make a change for America because there are big problems. The audience of the speech are the graduating classes of 2017 of Brooklyn College, the families, and the teachers who showed up to the ceremony. In Bernie Sanders speech he divides American up in categories of people such as the middle class, the poor, the rich and the people with different backgrounds and religions. The speech is focused on economic inequality, he uses references to” families who don’t have a lot of money” (1. 16) or this one “millions of people throughout this country who struggle to put food on the table” (ll. 17-18). This symbolizes that the potential receivers of the speech are the poor Americans and their families. Those who lives in New Yok and all the others across The United States. The language in the speech is formally since a speech shouldn’t have colloquially language. There are some words that is advanced such as oligarchic, disproportionately and demagogues. Those words aren’t words you would use in a daily day, but it is a speech so advanced words needs to be included. Bernie Sanders doesn’t include repetitions. His vocabulary is wide and very great, since he uses a lot of different words. Bernie Sanders doesn’t make use of humoristic phrases or sentences, so his tone is calm and serious. Bernie Sanders references to Brooklyn College, Flatbush, the poor, the middle class, the rich and James Madison High School and more. Which has a positive effect on the individual person, because it wakes some attention up in people where he grew up and where he graduated. The more he tells about his own youth the more people get encouraged and wakes attention up in them because they think it is interesting. The circumstances of the speech are the people that showed up to the ceremony, but also the viewers on the internet. So not only the graduating class of 2017 from Brooklyn College should make a change but also the internet viewers, primary the people who graduated at 2017. The intention of the speech is to make the graduating class of 2017 from Brooklyn College aware that The United States has a lot of problems that haven’t been solved yet and needs to be solved as soon as possible. Since they make a hole in the society and makes people question why it hasn’t been solved yet. Also, the present students’ needs to help solving the problems that The United States faces at the current time. The listeners can also help such as the parents or the professor at the ceremony, so not only the students but the message mainly goes out to them since they have a whole new life in front of them. He also says this to end his speech “So today as you graduate Brooklyn College, my message to you is very simple. Think big, not small, and help us create the nation that we all know we can become”. What Bernie Sanders mean by that is that you shouldn’t think that if you think a thing that’s sound impossible then it isn’t impossible. So, you shouldn’t start changing the small things but start big since the bigger the better. It’s better to solve one big problem than 10 small problems, because big problems fill more than the small problems does.
