What is the meaning of life? This is an existential question that people often ask. Finding the meaning of life can be very challenging. Especially if you feel like you have lost everything, and that nobody needs you. In the short story Land of the Lost the main character is trying to find a new meaning of life through solving a mystery, but she ends up appearing like a crazy person to everyone around her.

The main character in Land of the Lost is a lonely mother whose husband and kids have moved out and left her alone. Therefor she is trying to find a new meaning of life. “[…] part of the reason she was searching for a stranger’s daughter was that no one else needed her.” (p. 2, l. 61–62). The main character explains that no one needs her, so she wants to proof to the people around her that she is needed and that she can make a difference. That is why solving the case is crucial for the main character. Furthermore, I would argue that the main character feels empty because no one needs her and accordingly there is no point of her being alive. That is why she is trying to find a new meaning of life so that her life becomes meaningful again.
