Since slavery, blacks and whites had lived very apart, and from the late 1800s a summer of laws were introduced.
For example, according to the so-called Jim Crow laws, a black could not sit next to a white in buses and in many restaurants.
The segregation also applied to education where blacks were often denied access to the same schools and institutions as white children and adolescents.
Voting right.
Although the 15th constitutional amendment in 1870 had secured the right to vote for al US citizens, African Americans were prevented from using it in practice.
They had to pay election tax which they often could not afford, they had to prove that they could read, and they had to prove that they had property.
Equal Opportunities?
America is known to many as 'the land of opportunity' where everyone is created equal and equipped with equal opportunities to work their way up in society.
Even though America is often portrayed as a huge 'melting pot' with room for all cultures, races and ethnicities, it seems that racism and ethnic discrimination have always been and will continue to be major issues in the U.S.
