In this article from the British newspaper The Guardian, Barbara Ellen writes about her opinion on Stephen Twigg’s ideas of implementing debating societies to schools. The Communication Trust, which is a coalition of over 50 non-profit organisations, who work with children all over England to help improve their speech and communication, believe that too many students are unable to express themselves at school, but Barbara Ellen disagrees. She believes that the reason debating societies only exists at private schools and can not simply be put in to regular schools, is because private schools have funding, resources, culture and infrastructure which she also mentions in the text: “Private schools don't just have debating societies; they have the kind of funding, resources, culture and infrastructure that result in debating societies. Try copying all that in an inner-city comp”. Barbara Ellen does not believe that debating societies solves the issue and that the regular school kids deserve more than a downgraded version of what the private school kids get: “you can't just put debating societies into state schools and declare the problems of social inarticulacy and lack of confidence miraculously solved.” “State school pupils deserve more than some downgraded version of what the posh kids get.”
