Slavery refers to a condition in which individuals are owned by others, who control where they live and what they work. Slavery had previously existed throughout history, in many times and most places. The ancient Greeks, the Romans, Incas and Aztecs all had slaves.
Despite the fact that slavery is banned worldwide, modern forms of the threatening practice continue. More than 40 million people still grind away in debt enslavement in Asia, forced labor in the Gulf states, or as child workers in farming in Africa or Latin America.
Industrial slaves worked twelve hours per day, six days per week. The only breaks they received were for a short lunch during the day, and Sunday or the occasional holiday during the week.
Some slaves received small amounts of money, but that was the exception not the rule. The majority of their work was unpaid.
