Ashton Kutcher is a famous actor, known for many roles in several movies and television shows. In 2014 Kutcher became co-founder of a non-profit organization, to prevent human trafficking. After the traditional slavery of the 19th century was abolished, a new form of slavery is emerging, modern slavery. On the 15th of February 2017 actor and entrepreneur,Kutcher testified before the Committee on Foreign Relations within the US Senate, informing them about the importance of modern slavery.
Ashton Kutcher, actor well known for his roles in shows and movies like “Just married”, “That 70’s show”, “Two and a half men”, and many more. Since gaining a massive following and skyrocketing to fame. Kutcher has over the years shed lighting on the violations of human rights, more specifically, human trafficking. Kutcher has worked with different organizations through the years, before becoming a co-founder of “Thorn” (2012), alongside fellow actor Demi Moore. The pair created Thorn after learning about child human trafficking, from documentaries regarding this world issue. The documentary that affected the two actors took place in Cambodia. The documentary sent by MSNBC, inspired Demi Moore to investigate human trafficking and the sales of child pornography in Cambodia. She was then shocked to find out that this human rights violation was also common in the United States. This made the actors come together to create Thorn. Thorn is a non-profit technology organization, created to defend children from sexual abuse and exploitation. Whilst being established in acting, he has the later years of his career, his focus has been Spotlight and Thorn. On February 15, 2017, he stood before The United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. “Mr. Chairman and distinguished members of the Committee, I am honored to appear before you today to express my conviction that we can end modern slavery during our lifetimes. I want to express my gratitude to Chairman Corker for his vision, courage and tenacity, Senator Cardin, and the members of this Committee, for the work you did in a bipartisan way that made the End Modern Slavery Initiative a reality. It will change the world.”. Kutcher is presenting his testimony to the vision he has for putting an end to human trafficking, especially the ones affecting children. He believes that people, specifically the people in power can end this together. End modern day slavery. Throughout the testimony, Kutcher uses all three forms of appeals. The most frequent being Logos, naturally. “We know this because more than 4,000 officers from over 900 agencies across this country are using it and getting real results. In the last twelve months, it’s helped identify over 6,000 trafficking victims in the U.S., 2,000 of which were minors. It has also led to the identification of over 2,200 traffickers.” In this quote he uses logos. Using logos as appeal, he talks to the reason. By using actual numbers, it boosts his credibility as well. Another good example of logos is here “Spotlight is now being used in Canada, and we have great interest from the UK. Separately, our dark web tool (which I will discuss later) is being utilized by an international working group who focus on Child Sexual Abuse Material investigations in the Dark Web (over 40 users from 8 countries).” He emphasizes his arguments when using logos. The second form of appeal he uses is Ethos. An example of ethos is here “However, this is an issue that touches real people's lives. As a father of two young children, it is the stories of survivors and their resilience that have stayed with me and motivated me to do this work.” He talks about being a father himself, this quote “humanifies”, he talks about real life. It makes him more genuine in his statement, especially when mentioning his own children and being a father. Also, when starting of his speech and testimony he states, “Mr. Chairman and distinguished members of the Committee, I am honored to appear before you today to express my conviction that we can end modern slavery during our lifetimes.”. When reading this, it feels more authentic when he starts of by stating that he is honored. Like mentioned earlier, it gives us a more human view of him, and a feeling of truth in what he is fighting for. Overall, when the actor is using ethos, he uses his part as a father and famous actor, to humanize his statements. The last form of appeal the actor takes great use in, is Pathos. When using pathos, he makes his statements human and brings out emotion in the receiver. Like Ethos, Pathos brings out a more human view of Kutcher. Pathos helps Kutcher bring more connection with audience and helps have a more human view of the argument. A great example of Pathos is when telling the story about the young 15-year-old girl Amy (not her real name). “Let me give an example of a survivor I was thinking about today as I came to Capitol Hill for this hearing. In 2015, we learned of Amy (not her real name), a 15-year-old girl in Oakland who met her trafficker online and struck up a friendship. One day after school, she agreed to meet him in person and runaway. As soon as they were alone together, the man revealed he was a pimp and that Amy had to now sell herself for sex, otherwise he would beat her. He sexually assaulted Amy and forced her to start posting her own ads on online escort sites.”.
