Racism has existed all over the world and it has been there for generations. Racism is a world wide problem, things like discrimination, violence and slavery has been a big issue because of racism.

Slavery has always existed and still does. Slavery during and after Roman times was also racism. It became common in America, England and other countries in the west to use men, women and even children from different countries but mostly Africa as slaves. The white people were not used to people looking different from themselves. They considered black people the same as animals.

Black people were abused in the cruellest way you could ever imagine. Many women and children were tortured and raped. Men were also tortured.

Today there is a different kind of slavery. Now it’s not because of race discrimination but we have for example, forced prostitution, children getting sold to different factories and many other things.

Racial slavery stopped in the 1860’s but racism carried on. Martin Luther King became the leader in the American civil rights movement in the 1950’s. His dream was that everyone should be treated equal no matter the colour of your skin and he made the first “Negro” non-violent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States. At that time black people were treated different than the white. There were laws saying that black people were not aloud to go to same school, use the same toilet, eat the same places and many other things as the white. Black and white people’s seats were separated in for example cinemas and buses. There were certain seats in the back that black people were aloud to use. These laws were called ‘Jim Crows Laws’.
