We see food waste everywhere and we make lots of food waste every year. Especially in I-countries we throw out too much food, maybe we drop it on the floor, or it has a little mark on it, then we think it is not good enough anymore. It means that we have to buy more, and we need to produce even more. This waste has a big damage and affect on the planet
"Social supermarkets" offers discounted food only for poor people. Those people can save up to 70 percent on the food.
In Western Europe we see 1/3 of the world's produced food goes to waste, this could have feed one billion people.
Also, restaurants are throwing tons of food out every year. Toogoodtoogo changed that for many restaurants and grocery stores, now they sell out the food they had thrown out, to people who have the app. This makes a difference in the long run.
First of all, the pros for those social supermarkets are that it can safe poor people who don’t get enough food, for those who cannot afford food. It saves the food that nobody else would not have bought and then had to end up in the trash cans. "The food might be mislabeled, have damaged packaging or be nearing an expiration date. That food is still edible, though, so instead of getting thrown away, it's donated with a waiver of liability." therefor supermarkets can actually still be allowed to put it on sale again just cheaper.
