Hello, everyone and thank you guys for letting me come out, to you and give a speech about food waste. I am Toby and I’m a young entrepreneur who have focus on food waste, and what it does to us locally and globally. I hope you are ready to listen, all question can you ask to the end and shall we get started.
What is food waste and how and why does it happen. Food waste happens when something is not eaten or have gone bad. That happens nearly in every family. But the most food waste comes from the grocery stores “The report notes that currently retailers account for just over 1% of the estimated annual 15m tons of UK food waste” But when the retail stores sits on the top on the supply chains, they are the ones that can help allot with the food waste. We have some retailers who have reduced food waste “Asda, Co-operative Food, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose are among the retailers who reduced their food waste from 200,000 to 180,000 tons in a year.”. Some retail stores are starting to sell “ugly produces” with a 30% discount just because the fruit and vegetables are “ugly” we as the buyer won’t buy it but also the retail store won’t neither. A staggering “20-40% of fruit and veg produced by UK farmers ends up wasted; either left for animal feed, ploughed back into the land or sent to landfill” and at a Norfolk farm where they throw 10 tons of misshapen vegetables are rejected on a weekly basis, just because it was ugly.
