IntroductionWe are free and allowed to choose our own destiny. Or are we? Finding out what you stand for and how you live your life is a part of the process of becoming a grown up. But it’s not as easy as it sounds. It’s always hard choosing the path we want to take, we have so many opportunities compared to what we used to. Today we are free to vote, free to choose education, free to choose the place we want to live in, but that still makes it hard to choose your path. In the short story “A Gap of Sky” written by Anna Hope in 2008, the main character Ellie is walking around the streets of London, her walk around the London’s streets becomes a walk through her own mind.
Streams of consciousness writing styleThe short story is told from a third person narrator and from Ellie’s point of view who is the main character. The readers only get an insight into the story through Ellie’s thoughts. The short story is told with a stream of consciousness technique that shows the way Ellie thinks. The story is informally and is full of swearwords for example, “fuck” which is used in so many sentences. The story also has rhetorical questions for example, “what, really, was there to be reverent to? To whom? To what? To why? To God? To Mum? To Dad?” (p. 3, ll. 64-65). The use of stream consciousness also demonstrates what Ellie is like when she does drugs. The writing style is very chaotic, it is jumpy and confusing when she is on drugs, which makes it almost impossible for the readers to understand what she is talking about, “Nice, now. Coffee.
