Imagine a world where there is enough food for everyone. Just imagine. Well actually there is, but every year 1.3 bn tons of food gets wasted. That is a third of all the food that is produced, and we just throw it away? According to the UN, there would be enough food to feed the people who are malnourished, if we just reduced 25% of the food waste. 45% of all vegetables and fruits are wasted, 35% of fish and seafood, 20% of meat and 20% of dairy products. These numbers are way too high, but what causes all this food to get wasted?
Food waste is one of the biggest problems in the world at the moment, and the list of causes is long. The well-known “Buy one, get one free” is one of the causes as well as retailers and promoting products. These strategies are used by Super-markets when their products are reaching their final date. This “Buy one, get one free” concept is leading to people buying too much food. One of the causes is also the misunderstanding about the “best before” and “use by” labels which leads to people throwing edible foods away.
