I, Daniel Blake is a film that was released back in 2016. The film is directed by Ken Loach and Laura Obiols and written by Paul Laverty. The film belongs to the genre Drama, which belongs to realistic fiction.
The film takes place in a city 500 kilometres away from London called Newcastle, North Ireland. There we get introduced to our main character Daniel Blake. In a visit to a job Centre, Daniel interferes in a quarrel between the young lady, Katie, and a job consultant. In a heated situation, Katie, and Daniel, as well as Katie´s children, are escorted out by the security guard. Daniel slowly becomes part of Katie's family and they help each other out. Since Daniel does not receive sickness benefits, he must get a job. In order not to get a sanction, he attends a resume course. Meanwhile, Katie is tempted to take a job as a hooker to support her children, but Daniel gets ahead of her and tries to convince her not to take the job, that ends in a quarrel between them. From there Daniel’s life goes downhill.
The film lasts for approx. 96 minutes. The main plot of the film is that Daniel must get himself a job since he is an unemployed carpenter and therefore does not earn any money. However, the conflict is, therefore, the welfare system, which has a major role in the film since that’s part of the reason why Daniel cannot return to the labour market. The film follows the Hollywood model. We are at first introduced to the main character as well as some minor characters, where we are then presented to Daniel Blake during a doctor’s visit. Then the action gets deepened and reaches to the point of no return when Katie accepts the offer to become a hooker. It reaches its climax when Daniel has a heart attack, where the film fades out.
